The Vietnam War caused bitter unrest in America. In 1965, President Johnson sent one hundred thousand U.S. soldiers to Vietnam to support the South Vietnamese army. Soon, however, many Americans turned against the war. In 1967, thirty-five thousand war protesters gathered outside the Pentagon. Two years later, an even larger group of protesters marched in Washington, D.C. Still, the last American soldiers wouldn't return from Vietnam until 1973.
