What are the intersection points of the parabola given by the equation y equals x squared minus nine and the line given by the equation y equals x minus three?

Set the equations equal

x^2 − 9   = x − 3       rearrange as

x^2 − 9 −  x + 3   =  0

x^2 − x − 6   =  0      factor

(x −3) ( x + 2)  = 0      set each factor to 0 and we have have   x = 3   and x  = −2

And using x − 3,  when x = 3, y = 0

And when x = −2, y = −5

So the solutions are  (3, 0)   and (−2, −5)

cool cool cool
