Is -2 a zero of the function ? P(x)=x^3-x^2-4x+14

If -2 is a zero then P(-2)=0

lets see if it works

$$P(-2)=(-2)^3-(-2)^2-4*-2+14=-8-4+8+14=10 \ne0$$

SO  -2 is not a zero.

EXTRA INFO

this means that (x+2)  IS NOT a factor of  P(x)
