When adding a positive and negative,  remove the negative from the number momentarily.  Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. 

32-24=8

Now attach the negative back to -32.  Now,  take the sign off the number further from zero and put it on your difference.

 

Here,  it is -32.  So your answer is -8.

 

(Note:  I didn't say larger number due to the fact that,  technically,  all positives are bigger than negatives )

24+-32=

24-32=-8
