On Monday, I worked t-6 hours and earned 2t-5 dollars per hour. My friend Andrew worked 2t-8 hours but only earned t-5 dollars an hour. As it turns out, we earned the same amount. What is the value of t?

I thought of subtracting the two equations but it got no where for me! What do i do?

Amount earned  =  hours x dollars per hour.

You:        (t - 6)(2t - 5)  =  2t2 - 17t + 30

Andrew:  (2t - 8)(t - 5)  =  2t2 - 18t + 40

Since the two of you earned the same amount, set these equations equal to each other:

                                            2t2 - 17t + 30  =  2t2 - 18t + 40

Subtract 2t2 from both sides:     -17t + 30  =  -18t + 40

and, continue solving ...
