Thanks as I have passed the 1st unit of Maths. Still to sit the Physics. It was better than expected. On the day of the Maths exam, i forgot a calculator so had to chase one up. I also didn't get some easy points I should have. But I did very well after all that. Thanks for the help. I'm sure I will seek more and make more assistance in time and best use of my time this semester related to Maths and Physics. As well I will fix some of the course issues responsible for a larger gap in my understanding, including timetable adjustments. Stu.

I will also be at AIPM YEPP event on Thursday in Melbourne if anyone is going. Feel free to make your self known, and I can thank you in person.

Hi Stu I'm glad that your exams went well for you.

Rosala, in Australia students are allowed to use calculators in almost all maths tests from the beginning of high school.  This is usually the year that the student turns 12 year old.

This has been the case in NSW Australia since 1979.   (Stu is from Australia)

Hmm1that would make it so easy then!i wish we could do it out here too!but if we use one then we'll be marked as cheating so we cant !and i think high school starts from 10th isnt it!and so in 10th how can u be 12yr old!and i was in 7th grade when i turned 12yr old so how can they be 12 in high school!seems confusing!

Hi Rosala,

The school system is different all over the world and the names and grades can be very confusing.

In most of Australia High School is from year 7 to year 12.   (Starts at 11 or 12 years old and finishes at 17 or 18 years old)

Junior High is years 7 to 10 and

Senior high is years 11 and 12.

Just because a student can use a calculator in a test does not mean that the test has to be easy.  Sometimes it is harder because they teachers have to put in tricky questions.

Rosela, yeh calculators can be used, but it is maybe very difficult to do without one. For example I have no experience before this year and enter into calculus based engineering degree (first year). The calculator does not provide an answer it manifests one from your manual calculations. ALthough, I do think that it is more benificial to use a CAS which I don't know how which can help in many respects with calculations. Additionally the exam is only short 2 hours, but also the calculator is excluded from exams in later years of the degree depending on the subject.
