I know 1+1=2, but why does it equal 2, why can't it be something else like 11 or 3 or maybe just any number? So is there a formula for why 1+1=2, also I don't just want a link to a random website, I want an answer in easy English for someone who is not very good at math like me.
Thank's max, after you posted your answer, I found this http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/51551.html and I don't really get it, is there a simpler way to explain that?
I asked this question not long ago, too. And my dad, who is likely to faint when doing maths, answered my question.
Me:'Why is 1+1 = 2?'
Dad:'NOOOO! 1+1 = 1!!'
This is just a habit of human beings from ancient times that 1 item plus 1 item is 2 items.
Why 1 + 1 = 1......
1 grain of sand plus 1 grain of sand is still 1 larger grain of sand!! :)
Notes: When will 1 + 1 not equals 2?
When does 1 + 1 = -2: 1 minutes before 1 minutes before is 2 minutes before.
When does 1 + 1 = 1: Mentioned above.
When does 1 + 1 = 10: Binary system.
:)
