So
y = 2x^2 - 8 add 8 to both sides
y + 8 = 2x^2 divide both sides by 2
[ y + 8 ] / 2 = x^2 take both roots
±√ ( [ y + 8] / 2) = x "swap" x and y
±√ ( [ x - 8] / 2 ) = y
