The diagram of a rectangular field is shown below. The units of length are metres.

(rectangle x + 6 wide and x tall)

 

Given that the area is 72 m2, write an equation and solve it to find the length and 

width of the field.

 

Again, I'm not trying for homework answers, I am studying for my maths test and this is a practice test question. Thanks

Area = 72 m^2.

OR

Area = (x)(x+6) = x^2 + 6x.

Therefore 

x^2 + 6x = 72

x^2 + 6x - 72 = 0   <---- That became a quadratic.

(x+12)(x-6) = 0

x = -12 (rejected) OR x = 6

Therefore length = x = 6, and width = x + 6 = 6 + 6 = 12.
