Call the amount invested at 4% , x

And call the amount invested at 5%, 10000 - x

And using I = Prt, where t= 1, we have

(x).04 + (10000 - x)(.05) = 440  simplify

.04x + 500 - .05x = 440        subtract 500 from both sides  and combine like terms on the left

-.01x  = -60      divide both sides by -.01

x = $6000   and this is the amount invested at 4%

And the amont invested at 5% is just 10000 - x = 10000 - 6000 = $4000
