since lg(a) +lg(b) = lg(a*b) we have lg(8)+lg(8)= lg(8*8)=lg(64)

64=2^6 and you have the rule lg(a^b)=b*lg(a) and therefore

lg(8)+lg(8) = lg(8*8) = lg(64) = lg(2^6) = 6*lg(2)

so your solution is a=2

cheers
