Before the calculator logarithmic tables were used when dealing with the adding subtraction division and multiplication of huge numbers, expressing large numbers as an indice say 10 power of 23, can be expressed as log 10 (huge number) = 23. These tables and log rules made the manipulation of large numbers easy.
