She had 3 m left. We can do 8/8 which equals 1. And 5*1=5. 8-5=3.

start by converting 5/8 into a decimal = 0.625

 

8*0.625=5m string she used but we're looking for how many she has left

 

to find how many she has left, simply do total meters of string subtracted by how many meters of string she used

 

so 8-5=3m of string left over
