Madeline and Vivian found that the sum of -3 and 4 times the opposite of a number is 27 larger than the number. What is the number?

If N is the number, then -N is its opposite.     So we have  ......

-3 + 4(-N)  = N + 27   simplify

-3 - 4N  = N + 27    add 4N to both sides and subtract 27 from both sides

-30  = 5N    divide both sides by 5

-6 = N
