Two ice skaters stand together as illustrated in Figure (a) below. They "push off" and travel directly away from each other, the boy with a velocity of v = 0.470 m/s to the left. If the boy weighs 721 N and the girl weighs 484 N, what is the girl's velocity (in m/s) after they push off? (Consider the ice to be frictionless.)

Using conservation of momentum

Original momentum = 0

final total momentum = 0

(mv)= (mv)g

721/9.8 * .470    =   484/9.8  * vg

(721 * .470) / 484   =    vg       in  m/s
