Mary and Jane are walking down the street and each carry a basket with eggs in them.
If Mary gives Jane one of her eggs, then Jane will have twice as many eggs than Mary has.
If Jane gives one of her eggs to Mary, then they both will have the same number of eggs.
How many eggs are in each basket?
Call the number od eggs that Mary has, M and the the number that Jane has = J.
So we have the following system
2(M -1) = J + 1 → 2M - 2 = J + 1 (2)
M + 1 = J - 1 → M = J - 2 (1)
Putting (1) into (2), we have
2(J - 2) - 2 = J + 1 simplify
2J - 4 - 2 = J + 1
2J - 6 = J + 1
J = 7
And using (1)
M = J - 2
M = 7 - 2
M = 5
So.......June has 7 eggs and Mary has 5 eggs
