How do you solve 264 yd/s=___mi/h?
Please explain thoroughly, and explain it easily enough for a 5th grader to understand.
Thanks!

I will try!

264 yards / 1 second

You need to change 264 yards into miles
There are 1760 yards in a mile
with conversions you always have to multiply or divide.
A mile is much bigger than a yard so there will be less of them and the answer will be smaller.
Since the answer has to be smaller, it must be divide.
so
264 yards must be 264 divided by 1760 miles = 0.15 miles (from a calculator)

Now you need to change 1 second into hours. (It will just be a little bit of an hour)
There are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour so
there are 60 times 60 = 3600 seconds in an hour.
so
1 second = 1 divided by 3600 hours = a very tiny number. Since I am explaining to a 5th grader I will just leave it the way it is at the moment.
so
264 yards/1second = 0.15miles/(1 divided by 3600)hours => 0.15 / (1 divided by 3600) miles/hour => 540 miles/hour
I just did this on the calculator, put it in exactly as I wrote it. Don't forget the brackets. The fraction line after 0.15 can be put in as a divide sign.

A fraction bar and a divide sign are really the same thing. For example, 1 divided by 2 = 1/2

I hope that helps.
