this curve produces the following points
(0,1), (2, 4)
the average rate of change between these two points is just the slope of the line connecting them.
\(m = \dfrac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} = \dfrac{4-1}{2-0} = \dfrac 3 2\)
