(f*g)(x)   literally means that we are multiplying the functions f and g together...so we have

1 / x + 1  *   - 1 /x  =    -1/x^2  -  1/x

If "f" is supposed to be 1 / [x + 1]......then we have

1 / [x + 1]  * -1/x  =     -1/ [ x (x + 1) ]  = -1/ [x^2 + x ]
