Maryanne and Gary each planted corn in a garden. Maryanne planted four rows with ten plants in each row. Gary planted five rows with four plants each row. Who planted more corn?

Maryanne planted 4 rows with 10 plants each, so we must multiply 4 rows by 10 plants.

4*10=40

Maryanne planted 40 plants.

Gary planted 5 rows with 4 plants each, so we do the same thing.

5*4=20

Gary planted 20 plants.

Maryanne planted more corn than Gary.

(You can also tell in this specific case that Maryanne planted more because she has higher numbers. Note that this isn't a practical way to do it, though.)
