A car drives 2/3 of the distance of a trip at a speed of 60 mph, and 1/3 of the distance of a trip at a

speed of 50 mph. Find the average speed of the car throughout the trip. Give the answer in mph.

Distance = x

 

x / [x/60 * 2/3    +   x/50 * 1/3  ]                  'cancel out' the x's  and simplify/reduce a bit

1/(1/90 + 1/150) = 56.25 m/hr average
