The total rainfall for two days was 11.9 inches. The first day's total was 5.4 inches less than the second day's. How much rain fell on each day?
I think DragonSlayer was too tired to use any more brains!when im tired even i act like that becoz it feel that my mind is just about to turn off!like it hapened with me last night when Alan posted an answer explaining me and i couldnt understand what was going on so i just looged out and now in the morning i have come and ive understood that question very well!
btw thank Melody and Aziz even i was stuck in the answer which CPhill had posted but now all is clear!Thanks!
Let x be the rain that fell the second day...then the first day's rain was x - 5.4
So we have
(x - 5.4) + x = 11.9
You should be able to take it from here !!!
CPhill, I would rather have the answer to the math problem than the riddles.
DS, going on from what Chris posted, all you have to do is combine like terms and solve for x:
x - 5.4 + x = 11.9
2x - 5.4 = 11.9
2x = 17.3
x = 8.65...
1st day, x - 5.4 --> 8.65 - 5.4 = 3.25 inches.
2nd day, x --> 8.65 inches.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but Chris did post an equation and you should have tried solving that first...
In dragons defence I don't think he has learned any algebra yet.
(I might be wrong)
Ah, so creating variables...
Imagine this question in a different way. The first day's total was the same as the second day's.
Then, since both days have the same totals, we can just assign a variable, x, for the total number of inches of rain.
So, x + x = 11.9
However, in this question, we have the first day's total as 5.4 inches less than the second day's total.
In this case, x = second day's total, so the first day's total is 5.4 - second day's total or 5.4 - x.
Now, instead of just x + x, we have (5.4 - x) + x...
That's cool, I have heard of Master Chief before!
rain on second day + (rain on first day) = 11.9 inches
BUT rain on fist day was just 5.4inches less then on the second day so
rain on second day + (rain on second day - 5.4inches) = 11.9 inches
Just to make it easier to write down Chris called the rain on second day x
so
x+(x-5.3)=11.9 inches
do you understand this so far Dragon?
Come on Dragon, at least spend a little time thinking about what i just wrote.
Sorry Aziz I didn't realize that you had just posted something very similar. lol
I gues Dragon felt a little overwelmed.

DS......Here's a "non-standard" way of solving a problem like this in which we're told that two quantities equal something, and that one of the quantites is larger than the other by some amount.
Take the sum of the quantites and divide it by 2. So, we would have (11.9)/(2) = 5.95
Now take the difference of the quantities - in this case, 5.4, and divide it by 2, as well. So, (5.4 )/(2) = 2.7
Now, add 2.7 to 5.95 = 8.65
And subtract 2.7 from 5.95 = 3.25
And there are your answers......!!!!
Why does this work???....I could tell you, but then I'd have to terminate your existence........
