cheesecake.binyard: what is fraction division? and why the answer to the fraction division problem is bigger than the original numbers?
6 divided by 2 means how many 2s are there in 6
2+2+2=6 so the answer is 3
3 divided by 1/2 means how many 1/2s are there in 3
1/2 +1/2 =1
so
1/2 +1/2 + 1/2 +1/2 + 1/2 +1/2 = 3
There are 6 halves here so
3 divided by a 1/2 = 6
So is you divide by a number less than 1, your answer is bigger than the original number.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also 3 ÷ (1/2) = 3 x (2/1) = 3 x 2 = 6
To divide by a fraction you invert the second one (that is the one you are dividing by) and multiply.
