Richard's furniture store bought a couch and marked the price up 24%. At a 18% off sale the couch sold for $2,237. How much did Richard pay for the couch originally? (two decimal places)

Let the original price of  the Couch =C

Marked up by 24% =1.24C

18% off means that it sold for: 100% - 18% =82%

82% means: 82/100 =0.82. So you have:

0.82 x 1.24C =$2,237

1.0168C = $2,237       divide both sides by 1.0168

C = $2,237 / 1.0168

C = $2,200.04 what Richard paid for the Couch.
