The formula M=1/5t can be used to determine how far M, in miles, you are from lightning when its thunder takes t seconds to reach your ears. If it takes 8 sec for the sound of thunder to reach you after you have seen the lightning, how far away is the storm?

How far away is the storm?

M=1/5t=1/5*8=1/40=132 feet. Obviously there is something wrong with your formula. Check and see where the mistake is. Sound travels about 331 meters per second at sea level. 8 X 331=2.648 KM, or 1.645 miles, is the minimum distance of the storm.
