Solve for x:
3 x+8 = x^2+4

Subtract x^2+4 from both sides:
-x^2+3 x+4 = 0

The left hand side factors into a product with three terms:
-((x-4) (x+1)) = 0

Multiply both sides by -1:
(x-4) (x+1) = 0

Split into two equations:
x-4 = 0 or x+1 = 0

Add 4 to both sides:
x = 4 or x+1 = 0

Subtract 1 from both sides:
Answer: |x = 4               or              x = -1

8+3*x=2^2+x^2

8 + 3x  = 4 + x^2         subtract 8 + 3x from both sides

0  = 4 + x^2 - 8 - 3x       simplify

0 = x^2 - 3x - 4        factor

0 = ( x - 4) ( x + 1)

Set both factors to  0

x - 4  = 0                             and                          x + 1  = 0

add 4 to both sides                                          subtract 1 from each side

x = 4                                                                   x = -1

And those are the two solutions
