We can assume, # games won = x and # games lost = y
We have then the equations as
x + y = 74 and
x = 2y + 17

By substitution we get,,
2y + 17 + y = 74
Solving the above equation
3y = 57 ==> y = 19
Hence x = 2(19) + 17 = 55
Games won = 55 and Games Lost = 19.

Hi Jaclyn,
You have to set up 2 separate equations and solve them simultaneously.
Let L be the number of losses and W be the number of wins.

Just think for a bit.
they won 17 more than twice as many as they lost.
They lost L, what is twice that much? what is 17 more than twice that much?
do you see where I am going here?

They played 74 games altogether, what can you do with that?

See if you can do the rest by yourself. Let me know how you go!

I am sorry Usha,

I didn't mean to post over the top of you.
We must have both been writing our answers at the same time.
I didn't know that you had answered already.

Melody.
