One number is 2 more then 3 times another. The sum is 22. Find the numbers.

let x be the first number and y be the second number

1) write two equations
x=3y+2
x+y=22

2) Substitute in for x and solve for y
(3y+2)+y=22
4y+2=22
4y=20
y=...

3) solve for x by plugging in your y values into either equation
