"Texas christian university admits 3 out of every 4 students who apply to attend the school if 2,040 freshmen apply how many students will not be able to apply"

75% acceptance rate
x = freshmen accepted

x/2040 = 75/100, or x/2040 = 3/4
cross multiply
2040(3) = 6120
4(x) = 4x
input values into equation
4x=6120
divide both sides by 4
x = 1530
therefore, if 2040 apply, and 1530 get accepted, then 510 aren't accepted.

After finishing, I realized that the question is invalid. An uncountable number of people can choose not to apply.

if 3/4 get in then 1/4 will not

(because 3/4 + 1/4 = 1 which is everybody)

so the answer is just

1/4 of 2040.

which is the same as our guests answer, just a little easier to arrive at. Thanks guest!

Just divide 2,040 by 4.
2,040 divided by 4 is 510.
The answer is 510 students.
