I'm guessing that you are talking about a line segment? It would help if you clarified it in your question.

So the length of AB = 15
And the length of AC = 12
You can draw this out to make the concept a lot simpler.

Since AC is shorter that AB, it has to be part of AB.
Then the rest of AB would be BC,
So BC would be AB-AC
=15-12
