A ball is dropped from a tower 60m high. The ball has an initial velocity of 3.0m/s downward. How far has the ball fallen from its initial position in 1.0s?

if im not wrong, but I think its 3 meters. for distance = Speed* time, so for one second it would take the ball moving at 3meters per second, to move 3 meters. but if you were to account for the fact that the ball will be increasing in speed as it falls, then you would have to know the mass of the ball, then you would calculate the change in speed over time, or acceleration.

x=position of ball  xo= original position of ball   vo = original velocity    t = time   a = acceleration of gravity 9.8 m/s^2

x=xo + vot + 1/2 a t^2    note the vo and a are DOWNWARD in this example and thus NEGATIVE

x = 60 + -3(1) + 1/2 (-9.8)(1^2)

x = 60 -3 -4.9 = 52.1 m above the ground  or 7.9 m down from its original position
