Anonymous solved for x first which is a good way to tackle a problem like this one.
3x - 7 = x + 11
subtract x off both sides
2x-7 = 11
add 7 to both sides
2x-7+7=11+7
2x=18
now you can finish the solution and get x=9 and then sub 9 into the new expression to the value.
OR
you can just say
2x+1=18+1=19
both ways are good.
