Katie spent $7.24 on lunch at the mall. She bought a CD for $13.78 and a pair of jeans for $24.71. While she was at the mall, one of her friends paid her back $20 that she had borrowed from Katie. If katie now has $49.27, how much money did she take with her to the mall?

First, let's total what she spent at the mall.

7.24 + 13.78 + 24.71

Let's call the amount of money she took to the mall "x"

Then, the amount of money that she had after her friend paid her back was just

x + 20

So the total amount of money she had (x + 20) - (amount she spent) = 49.27

Setting this up as an equation , simplifying, and solving for x,, we have

x + 20 - 45.73 = 49.27

x - 25.73 = 49.27

x =
49.27 + 25.73

Therefore, she brought $75 to the mall.

You could do it the other way around too.

Katie has $49.27 but her friend just gave her $20 so before that she had $29.27. As CPhill already worked out she had spent $45.73 at the mall.
So when she first entered the mall she must have had $29.27 + $45.73
