Ali, Bala and Charles had 60 marbles altogether. Ali gave 3/10 of his marbles to Bala and 1/5 of his marbles to Charles. In the end, all 3 boys had the same number of marbles.

(a) Who had more marbles at first, Bala or Charles? How many more?

(b) What fraction of the total number of marbles did Bala have at first?

A + B +C  = 60

(7/10)A  = B +(3/10)A   →   B = (4/10)A

(4/5)A = C + (1/5)A  → C = (3/5)A

So

A + (4/10)A +(3/5)A = 60

A +A = 60

2A =60

A =30

B = (4/10) (30)  = 12

C = (3/5)(30) = 18

a) C had   18  -12  =  6 more marbles than B at the start

b) B had  12/60  = 1/5 of the total at first
