A delivery company is paid $9 for each item delivered on time. It is not paid anything for each item delivered late. For each item delivered late it must pay the client $5.00 penalty. In the month of June the company earned $12000 for the jobs done. It was found that out of every 18 items delivered, 3 were delivered late. How many items were delivered in June altogether?

Let i = items delivered

3/18 i delivered late   3/18(-5)i = fee for late parcels

15/18 i Delivered on time  15/18 (9)i = moner earned for on time parcels

Then     3/18(-5)i + 15/18 (9) i = 12000    solve for i

-15/18i + 135/18 i = 12000

120i/18 =12000

120i = 12000(18)

i = 12000(18)/120 =100(18)=1800 number of items delivered
