Fred left town B for Town A at 0730h.Linda left town B for town C at the same time. At 1030h,they were 480 km apart.Both Fred and Linda reached their destination at the same time 1200h.

(a) Find the distance between town A and C
(b) If Linda's speed was 3/5 the speed of Fred, find Fred's speed

First Assuming Town A, B, & C are in a straight line to one another.
[if these towns were not in a straight line, we could then use trigonometry to determine these distances. Given that we had the bearings of each vehicle.]

(a) In 3hrs of traveling they net 480km. s=d/t Their total speed would be = 480km/3h=160km/h
There are two of them traveling so if they are traveling the same speed 160km/h / 2 people =80km/h per person average.

Assuming that they continue at this speed. The complete trip is 4.5h. Total distance between A and C is D=s*t 160*4.5 = D of 720 km.

(b) Total Speed = Fred's Speed + Linda Speed
3/5=60% or .6 Fred's speed = X
X + .6X = 160
1.6x = 160
x = 160/1.6 = 100
Fred's Speed 100km/h
Linda's speed 60km/h

If you now want to find distance A-B or B-C you can do that to check your math.
D=s*t
A-B=100*4.5=450km
B-C=60*4.5=270km
Total Distance 450km + 270km = 720 km.

Hope this helps, Good luck.
