(14 + 36 ) / 5 = $.......... in each envelope

Five envelopes each contain the same amount of money. After 14 is removed, 36 is left. How much was in each envelope?  

There was 36 + 14 = 50 before any was removed.  50 equally distributed among 5 envelopes is 10 per envelope.

So we started with X, and then $14 were removed. We had $36 left.

X-14=36

+14    +14

X=50

There were 5 envolopes, so we divide X by five

X/5=50/5=10

There were $10 in each envolope.
