A flagpole is 30 feet high, and a mailbox is 3.5 feet high. The mailbox casts a shadow that is 5.25 feet long. How long is the flagpoles shadow at the same time?

Solved by a proportion......

Mailbox shadow length / Mailbox Height  = Flagpole Shadow Length / Flagpole Height

5.25 / 3.5  =  S /  30       cross-multiply

30 * 5.25  =  3.5 S

157.5  =  3.5 S       divide both sides by 3.5

157.5 / 3.5  =  S  =  45 ft  = Flagpole Shadow Length
