a collection of quarters and nickels is worth $1.25. there are 13 coins all. how many of each are there?

Let N be the number of quarters.....

Then, 13 - N  is the number of nickels

 

And

 

Value of each nickel * their number + Value of each quarter * their number   = total value

 

5 (13 - N)   +  25  (N)    =   125      simplify

 

65 - 5N    + 25 N     = 125

 

65 + 20N     = 125       subtract  65 from both sides

 

20N  =  60                 divide both sides by 20

 

N  = 3      quarters

 

And  13 - N    = 13 - 3  = 10  is the number  of nickels
