x = original price

 

20 % discount means you pay 80% of original price

 

 

.80 x = $ 60       divide both sides by   .8

x = $ 75   originally

Call the original price of the shirt x.  Remember that 100% is just another way of saying 1.00.    

 

             x • (1.00 – 0.20)  =  $60   

 

             x • 0.80  =  $60
