I'm not sure how to do this one:

Carson went to pick apples at an orchard.he gave one-third of his apples to his friend Nathan.then he gave one-half of what he had to his friend Nikki.on his way home he dropped one-fourth if what he had left,so that he only had 9 for him and his family.how many apples did Carson pick originally?

x = number of apples with which he started

    he gives away 1/3      so he has 2/3 left

         2/3  x      then he gives 1/2 away....leaving him 1/2 of what he had at this point

             1/2  2/3 x      then he dropped  1/4  ...so he still has 3/4 at this point

                 3/4   1/2    2/3  x   =  9

                  6 /24 x = 9

                          x = original amount = 36 apples
