Tom and Henry had the same number of marbles. Tom gave away 1/2 of his marbles. Henry gave away 3/4 of his marbles. Then, Henry had 16 fewer marbles than Tom. How many marbles did Tom and Henry each have at first?

t = h initially

 

then

t - 1/2 t =  h- 3/4 h  + 16        sub in t = h

h - 1/2 h = 1/4 h + 16

1/2h - 1/4 h = 16

1/4 h = 16

h = 64     each had 64 originally     128 total
