1 kg=1,000 grams

1,000 x 1,000=1,000,000 grams

1,000,000 / 10^-3 =1,000,000,000=10^9 grains of sand in 1,000 kg.

Really cannot answer this question without the UNITS of the grain of sand 10^-3 What? Milligrams? Grams? Kilograms?

1,000 grains of sand are generally taken to be about 1 gram. or 1 grain=1/1000 g. At least, that is my take on it.
