a length of a tunnel on a construction plan is 1 1/4 feet long. The actual tunnel is to be 18 1/3 yards long. What will be the ratio, in simplest form, of the length of the actual tunnel to the length on the construction plan?

1 1/4/ (18 1/3 x 3)  =  1.25 ft /55 ft  =  1/44   or 1:44 scale

18 +1/3 yards = 55ft    1 + 1/4 ft = 1.25 ft

 

So

 

55 /  1.25 =  44 / 1  [ or,  44 : 1 ]

Although the scale is 1:44   the question asks for the ratio of the actual tunnel TO the plans so cphill has it right 44:1
