so ive kept asking google how but instead of explaining how square miles are converted into square kilometers it just give me the anwser, so if any one can explain the convertion to me, it would help alot. i know its 2.58999 but why? im doing math homeworks and the question was

                                                               4.3 × 10^8 mi^2 to km

i got 1.1×10^9km^2 but that was because i had to cheat. can some one explain how i got the anwser? include base units like km and miles not squared if you can. thanks to anyone that trys.

1 mile  =  1.609344 km

Therefore,  (1 mile)²  =  (1.609344 km)²      ===>   1 square mile  =  2.589955924 square kilometers

                                                                  ===>  1  =  2.589955924 sq km / sq mi

(The reason that I solved the above equation for 1 is because I can always multiply by 1 without changing the number value and multiplying sq mi by sq km / sq mi will result in an answer of sq km.)

(Also, mi²  is the same as sq mi.)

===>  4.3 x 10 ^8 mi²

       =  4.3 x 10 ^8 mi²  x 1

       =  4.3 x 10 ^8 mi²  x  2.589955924 sq km / sq mi            (multiply by the conversion factor)

       =  11.1 x 10 ^8 sq km

       =  1.11 x 10^9 sq km
