Mike is painting his house and has a 20 foot ladder. He wants the ladder to reach 16 feet up the side of his house so he can finish painting.

How far from the base of his house should he place the ladder ?

it is a triangle the hypotenuse is 20 ft  the inside of the triangle is 16 ft and x is the last side.

Since it is a RIGHT TRIANGLE , you can use the pythagorean theorem to find the other side (the distance from the base of the ladder to the house)

x^2 + 16^2 = 20^2

x=12 ft
