Alexandra needs to rent a car while on vacation. The rental company charges $18.95, plus 17 cents for each mile driven. If Alexandra only has $40 to spend on the car rental, what is the maximum number of miles she can drive?

M = miles driven....and we have

18.95 + .17M =  40       subtract 8.95 from both sides

.17M  = 21.05         divide both sides by .17

M  = 21.05 / .17   =21.05/.17 = 123.82 ≈ 123 miles

cool cool cool
