Without a calculator, you'll need to find a common denominator of 4 and 8 (8 will work....but you could use 16 0r 24 etc...though 8 will be the easiest)
2 1/4 + 6 3/8 = 2 2/8 + 6 3/8 = (2 + 6) + (2/8 + 3/8) = 8 5/8
