A chemist needs to add a solution of 5% acid to a solution of 20% acid to obtain a 24 oz solution of 10% acid.

We have the following equation :

.05x +   .20(24 - x) = .10 (24)     multiply through by 100 to clear the decimals

5x + 20(24 - x)  = 10 (24)   simplify

5x + 480 - 20 x   = 240

-15x + 480  = 240   subtract 480 from each side

-15x = - 240     divide both sides by -15

x = 16 ounces of the 5% solution

cool cool cool
