x * y  = - 48      (1)

x + y  =  13  →  y = 13 - x     (2)

Sub  (2)  into (1)

x ( 13 - x)  =  -48

13x - x^2  = -48  rearrange as

x^2 - 13x - 48  = 0         factor

(x - 16) ( x + 3)   = 0         set each factor to 0  and solve for x

x - 16   = 0                                x + 3   = 0

add 16 to both sides                   subtract 3 from both sides

x =  16                                        x  =  -3

Using  (2) to  find y

y =  13 - 16  =  -3                    y  =  13 - (-3)   = 16

So......the two numbers  are  16  and -3

cool cool cool
